FAQs for Event Horizon EBooks

dot  Why should I submit a new or backlist/previously published book to Event Horizon
EBooks instead of producing my own "e-book," selling and marketing it on my own,
and keeping the whole 70% of the cover price that Amazon.com will pay me?
If we agree to publish an ebook as an Event Horizon EBook, we work to keep the production costs down and we offer our "advance" agreement for backlist/previously published books. We do not charge any fees for new, previously unpublished books we publish under any of our imprints, in part because we do not accept for publication any new manuscripts that aren't up to our artistic and commerical standards or require more than standard copy and content editing.

We achieve far more market penetration than an individual author can without interesting a distributor (difficult for an individual) or hiring a marketing and public relations firm. We sell not just through Amazon.com but Barnes & Noble, Kobo (Borders, Indigo, Chapters), our website store, and other ebook and media outlets. We're constantly in the process of expanding our sales outreach program.

We promote our books through print and electronic catalogs, through our presence at major book shows and conventions, through our Facebook and websites and online blogs, via electronic and print advertising, and with promotional items and materials. We are planning production of printed color cover cards for book signings, cards that will contain discount codes for the purchase of our ebooks from our website store and other vendors.

We pay a better royalty rate for new books (percent of cover) than most publishers, and a far better rate (the major percentage of net sales) for backlist books by established authors. As in any publishing contract, our actual rates depend on what terms we negotiate with the author. Our contracts are, however, quite simple and easy to comprehend, even for someone without industry experience.

We do the accounting and the collections, and we pay backlist royalties triennially to fit the 90-day delay in royalty payments by the vendors.

We provide the ISBN and the copyright service.

Why do we do this? We do it to create and sell quality ebooks, leaving our authors free to write.

dot  If I come to Britton & Knowles or the EBook Project as a client and pay you to
produce my book, will you publish it through Event Horizon EBooks or one of your
    other imprints?
Absolutely not. Once again, we do not charge any fees for new, previously unpublished books we publish under any of our imprints, including Event Horizon EBooks. The EBook Project will take on any (legal) production job for the right fee, whether it's a print job or an ebook, but our imprints are not now and never will be part of a vainty or pay-to-publish scheme.

If we find a jewel of a new, unpublished book or an excellent previously published book among production jobs submitted to the EBook Project, we may tender a contract offer to publish under one of our imprints. We'd be foolish not to do so. The chances of this occurring, however, are vanishingly small in the case of a first time, unpublished author. Once we do make a publishing offer to an EBook project client, and once that offer is accepted, our standard publishing contract conditions apply.

FAQs for The EBook Project

dot  I'm pretty tech savvy. Why shouldn't I learn all of this technical process,
buy some software, and produce quality ebooks for myself?
Do you really want to expend the time, labor, and money this requires ... or would you rather spend your time writing?

Not only do we offer the art, editing, and design services of professionals, as well as the benefits of our specific process that allows us to economically produce quality ebooks, we offer all of the technical services you could possibly need.

As part of our basic production service we provide our clients with the two standard ebook format files, ePub (B&N Nook) and mobi (Amazon.com Kindle), and full metadata files. For a small additional fee, we will provide the client ebook files in any requested format. We can produce print and electronic publicity media as well.

We have also streamlined the labor-intensive process of the OCR scanning of backlist books for which no word processing files exist, making what was once an incredibly detailed and expensive process commerically feasible.

dot  Why should I pay the EBook Project to produce an ebook for me when I can
just run it through an "easy" internet-based program for $15 and get an
"e-book" that I can sell on my own?
In a market that's becoming increasingly crowded by fast ebooks that have all the style of a photocopied school workbook and give the reader about as much reading pleasure as the driest technical report, our carefully and artistically designed ebooks stand out as a quality product ... and that which stands out gets noticed, and that which gets noticed sells and keeps selling.

dot  People say that an attractive cover isn't integral to the sales potential of
an ebook, so why should I pay an artist and a designer to create a cover for
    my ebook?
As the new color ereaders replace the older, black and white e-ink readers, the cover of your ebook will be the pinpoint of the buyer's first impression, and will therefore be vital to increased sales. Sending your ebook out with a plain cover design, or with a black and white cover, or both, is equivalent to sending it into the internet wilderness naked and without a recognizable face.

The decision is up to you. If you provide us with a simple cover of your own design, or if you want complete control of the cover art and design, and so have these services provided by professionals of your own hiring, we'll be glad to provide just the basic interior design and production service for your ebook and incorporate the cover work you provide to us into that design.

Or, if you wish us to add cover art and/or design to the production, we work with a number of professional artists and designers to produce stunning, selling, full-color covers.

dot  The flow text in an "e-book" always contains errors and omissions,
misrepresented styles and characters, and it doesn't look like a real book
anyway. Why should I pay a professional editor or pay the EBook Project
    to edit it for me?
We make certain that the flow text in our ebooks looks as much like the text of a print book as possible, and our design process ensures that there are no errors, omissions, or misrepresented styles or characters.

Are you having your book edited by a pro prior to providing us with the text? If so, you're ahead of the game, and we're glad to work with you. If not, consider our content and copy editing services. All of our editors are experienced professionals.

dot  What makes your ebooks (and print books) better than the rest
Go to the EBook Project page to check out the long list of what we do different, whether it's for ebooks or print books. If you want to see more, email us with your e-reader type we'll send you a sample (incomplete) of one of our ebooks.
